CHINESE NEW YEAR 2015

Kung hei fat choy!  Kung Hei Fat Choy! = Happy New Year!

2015 is the Year of the Goat!Year of the Goat
The new Chinese New Year starts on 19th February 2015 and finishes on 7th February 2016.

What Is Chinese New Year?

Chinese New Year is the most important of the Chinese holidays. It is a time of celebration, feasting with the family, fireworks and giving presents. It is a 15-day holiday, beginning on the first day of a new moon and ending with the full moon on the day of the Lantern Festival. The Chinese calendar is based on the lunar year, so the date of Chinese New Year changes every year.

Chinese New Year traditions

Different parts of China have very different traditions. These are the most typical:
  • Some days before the Chinese New Year, people will do a complete cleaning of the house to remove the old and welcome the new.
  • After the cleaning, people decorate the house to welcome the New Year. Most of the decorations are red.
  • The majority of Chinese people have New Year's Eve dinner at home, not at a restaurant. All the family have dinner together. They usually eat fish.
  • They have fireworks displays.
  • At Chinese New Year parents, family and friends give money to children in red envelopes. The red colour symbolizes good luck.

STORY: HAPPILY EVER AFTER ( BS 6 UNIT 2)

This video and its rights are property of Oxford University Press.
The share in this blog has no commercial, but educational purposes.

Princess Paula and Prince Harry often spend time together.

Prince Harry: You’re very pretty. Please marry me when we’re older.
Princess Paula: Yes, of course. Then we can live happily ever after.

The princess always wears lots of jewellery. Today she’s wearing her gold crown, her pearl earrings and her new diamond ring.

Princess Paula: I love my ring. It’s the prettiest ring in the world.
Prince Harry: Come on, Paula. Let’s go swimming.

The prince and princess sometimes go to the swimming pool and they sometimes go to the lake.

Princess Paula: Let’s swim in the lake today. It’s nice and sunny.
Prince Harry: OK.

Princess Paula takes off her jewellery.

Prince Harry: I’m not taking off my crown. A real prince never takes off his crown.

Suddenly, the prince and princess see a giant eagle.

Eagle: Aha! A gold crown.
Prince Harry: Don’t be scared, Paula. I can protect you.
Princess Paula: I’m not scared!

The eagle takes the prince with his crown.

Prince Harry: Help!
Princess Paula: Don’t be scared, Harry. I can save you.

The princess puts on her jewellery.

Princess Paula: I’ve got an idea.

The princess is very brave. She goes into the forest and talks to the eagle.

Princess Paula: Please free Prince Harry. Have my gold crown.
Eagle: No. I prefer the prince’s crown.

Princess Paula is sad but she has another idea.

Princess Paula: Please free Prince Harry. Have my crown and my pearl earrings.
Eagle: No. I prefer the Prince’s crown.

Princess Paula is sad but she makes a decision.

Princess Paula: Please free Prince Harry. Have my crown, my pearl earrings and my diamond ring.
Eagle: OK.

But when the prince sees Paula, he’s very angry.

Prince Harry: Where’s your pretty jewellery?
Princess Paula: The eagle has got it. But you are free and we can be together.

Prince Harry: But you haven’t got a crown. You don’t look like a real princess.
Princess Paula: You don’t act like a real prince and I don’t want you any more!

So the prince and princess don’t get married and they don’t live happily ever after.

Write a comment and answer the questions. You'll get extra points.
