SAINT PATRICK'S DAY SYMBOLS

A SHAMROCK

The shamrock is Ireland's national emblem because, according to the legend, St. Patrick used it to illustrate the Trinity. The idea that God is really three-in-one: The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit.

The Irish have considered shamrocks
as good-luck symbols since earliest times, and today people of many other nationalities also believe they bring good luck.

                                      A LEPRECHAUN

The name leprechaun comes from the old Irish word "luchorpan" which means "little body."

A leprechaun is a male Irish fairy who looks like a small, old man about 60 cm tall.

He's got big ears and a long red beard. He always wears a green crooked hat and green clothes.
According to the legend, leprechauns are reserved and unfriendly. They live alone, and pass the time making shoes. They are very rich and have a hidden pot of gold!

THE COLOUR GREEN

In Ireland, there is a lot of rain and mist, so the 'Emerald Isle' is really green all year-round. The beautiful green landscape was probably the inspiration for the national colour.

                                        THE HARP

The harp is an ancient musical instrument used in Ireland for centuries. It is also a symbol of Ireland. It appears on Irish coins, the presidential flag, uniforms and official documents.

ST. PATRICK'S LEGEND

This is a famous Irish legend. Ireland is an island in the Atlantic Ocean.

A long time ago there lived a priest in Ireland. His name was Patrick.

In Ireland there were lots of  snakes and people were scared.

Patrick wanted to help. He played the drum and ...

... the snakes followed the music and slid away.
Patrick walked all over the island, until the last snake disappeared.

The people were very happy. They called Patrick a saint.
Today there aren't any snakes in Ireland.
