IT'S SUMMER

Today is 21st June. The Summer solstice starts and it marks the first day of the summer season in the northern hemisphere. On this day the Sun reaches its hightest position in the sky. In our city, Valencia (Spain), it will be at exactly 12:51.
The word solstice is from the Latin word “solstitium”, meaning “sun-stopping”, because the point at which the sun appears to rise and set stops and reverses direction after this day.
In the northern hemisphere, (North America, Central America, Europe, Asia, northern Africa), the June solstice day has the longest hours of daylight (the longest day of the year). It is when the sun has reached its nearest point from the equator and marks the first day of summer.
In the southern hemisphere, (Australia, New Zealand, South America, Southern Africa), the June solstice day has the shortest hours of daylight (the shortest day of the year). It is when the sun has reached its furthest point from the equator and marks the first day of winter.
