ALL SAINTS' DAY IN SPAIN

All Saints' Day is celebrated in Spain on November 1st, the day after Halloween.
It is a national holiday and shops and schools are closed.

How do the Spanish Celebrate All Saints' Day?

On this day many people visit the graves of dead relatives in cemeteries and honour them. They clean their tombstones and decorate them with flowers.

 

Lots of flower sellers line the streets.

José Zorilla's 1844 play “Don Juan Tenorio”, is traditionally staged in many theatres on this day.The play is the famous and romantic story about the mythical Don Juan and Doña Inés.

There are some traditional pastries Spanish people eat on All Saints' Day.

The most common is 'Huesos de Santo' (saint's bones), made of marzipan, eggs and sugar syrup.

'Panellets' 

These typical sweets, made from almonds, sugar, egg whites and pine nuts are delicious and best enjoyed with a good bottle of muscatel wine! 

 'Buñuelos de viento'

'Buñuelos' are dough balls made with flour, butter and eggs and deep fried in oil.

In Catalonia, the locals eat 'Castanyada', a meal that consists of chestnuts, 'panellets' and sweet potatoes.
